How it's built.
Most of what gets called custom is really a combination of things we already build, arranged around a problem specific to one yard — a slope, a sightline, a utility easement, a neighbor's window.
The scope matters more here than anywhere else. On a standard fence you can picture the finished thing from three words. On a custom build, the drawing and the written scope are the only shared picture, so we spend the time making them right.
If nobody can describe it the same way twice, it isn't scoped yet.
What goes wrong
Custom is where corner-cutting hides best, because there's nothing to compare it against. If it isn't scoped in writing, it isn't scoped.
Questions
- Do you do repairs, or only new builds?
- Both. Repairs are worth asking about — a sagging gate or a failed section is often fixable without redoing the whole run.
- Can you fix drainage while you're out here?
- Often, yes. Grade and drainage problems are frequently the reason something failed in the first place, so they get looked at during the scope regardless.
